CHAPTER 7 (The Great Controversy)

The Betrayal of Christ

I was then carried down to the time when Jesus ate the Passover supper with his disciples.  Satan had deceived Judas, and led him to think he was one of Christ’s true disciples; but his heart had ever been carnal.  He had seen the mighty works of Jesus, he had been with him through his ministry, and yielded to the overpowering evidences that he was the Messiah; but he was close and covetous.  He loved money.  He complained in anger of the costly ointment poured upon Jesus.  Mary loved her Lord.  He had forgiven her sins which were many, and had raised from the dead her much loved brother, and she felt that nothing was too dear to bestow upon Jesus.  The more costly and precious the ointment, the better could Mary express her gratitude to her Saviour, by devoting it to him.  Judas, as an excuse for his covetousness, said that the ointment might have been sold and given to the poor.  But it was not because he had any care for the poor; for he was selfish, and often appropriated to his own use that which was entrusted to his care to be given to the poor.  Judas had not been attentive to the comforts and wants of Jesus, and to excuse his covetousness, he often referred to the poor.  And this act of generosity on the part of Mary was a most cutting rebuke of his covetous disposition.

The way was prepared for the temptation of Satan to find a ready reception in Judas’ heart.  The Jews hated Jesus; but multitudes thronged him to listen to his words of wisdom, and to witness his mighty works.  This drew the attention of the people from the chief priests and elders, for the people were stirred with the deepest interest, and anxiously followed Jesus, and listened to the instructions of this wonderful teacher.  Many of the chief rulers believed on Jesus, but were afraid to confess it, fearing they would be put out of the synagogue.  The priests and elders decided that something must be done to draw the attention of the people from Jesus.  They feared that all men would believe on him.  They could see no safety for themselves.  They must lose their position, or put Jesus to death.  And after they should put him to death, there were still those who were living monuments of his power.  Jesus had raised Lazarus from the dead.  And they feared that if they should kill Jesus, Lazarus would testify of his mighty power.  The people were flocking to see him who was raised from the dead, and the rulers determined to slay Lazarus also, and put down the excitement.  Then they would turn the people to the traditions and doctrines of men, to tithe mint and rue, and again have influence over them.  They agreed to take Jesus when he was alone; for if they should attempt to take him in a crowd, when the minds of the people were all interested in him, they would be stoned.

Judas knew how anxious they were to obtain Jesus, and offered to betray him to the chief priests and elders for a few pieces of silver.  His love of money led him to agree to betray his Lord into the hands of his bitterest enemies.  Satan was working directly through Judas, and in the midst of the impressive scene of the last supper, he was contriving plans to betray Jesus.  Jesus sorrowfully told his disciples that all of them would be offended because of him, that night.  But Peter ardently affirmed that although all should be offended because of him, he would not.  Jesus said to Peter, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat; but I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not; and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.

I then viewed Jesus in the garden with his disciples.  In deep sorrow he bade them watch and pray lest they should enter into temptation.  Jesus knew that their faith was to be tried, and their hopes disappointed, and that they would need all the strength they could obtain by close watching and fervent prayer.  With strong cries and weeping, Jesus prayed, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me, nevertheless, not my will, but thine be done.  The Son of God prayed in agony.  Large drops of sweat like blood came out of his face, and fell upon the ground.  Angels were hovering over the place, witnessing the scene, while only one was commissioned to go and strengthen the Son of God in his agony.  The angels in heaven cast their crowns and harps from them, and with the deepest interest silently watched Jesus.  There was no joy in heaven.  They wished to surround the Son of God, but the commanding angels suffered them not, lest, as they should behold his betrayal, they would deliver him; for the plan was laid out, and it must be fulfilled.

After Jesus had prayed, he came to see his disciples.  They were sleeping.  He had not the comfort and prayers of even his disciples in that dreadful hour.  Peter who was so zealous a little before, was heavy with sleep.  Jesus reminded him of his positive declarations, and said unto him, What! could ye not watch with me one hour?  Three times the Son of God prayed in agony, when Judas, with his band of men, was at hand.  He met Jesus as usual to salute him.  The band surrounded Jesus; but there he manifested his divine power, as he said, Whom seek ye? I am he.  They fell backward to the ground.  Jesus made this inquiry that they might witness his power, and have evidence that he could deliver himself from their hands if he would.

The disciples began to hope as they saw the multitude with their staves and swords fall so quickly.  As they arose and again surrounded the Son of God, Peter drew the sword and cut off an ear.  Jesus bid him put up the sword, and said unto him, Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?  I saw that as these words were spoken, the countenances of the angels were animated.  They wished then, and there, to surround their commander, and disperse that angry mob.  But again sadness settled upon them as Jesus added, But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?  The hearts of the disciples sunk again in despair and bitter disappointment, as Jesus suffered them to lead him away.

The disciples were afraid of their own lives, and fled one this way, and the other that, and Jesus was left alone.  O what triumph of Satan then!  And what sadness and sorrow with the angels of God!  Many companies of holy angels, with each a tall commanding angel at their head, were sent to witness the scene.  They were to record every act, every insult and cruelty imposed upon the Son of God, and to register every pang of anguish which Jesus should suffer; for the very men should see it all again in living characters.

Mat 26:1  And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said unto his disciples, 

Mat 26:2  Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified. 

Mat 26:3  Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, 

Mat 26:4  And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him. 

Mat 26:5  But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar among the people. 

Mat 26:6  Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, 

Mat 26:7  There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat. 

Mat 26:8  But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste? 

Mat 26:9  For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor. 

Mat 26:10  When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me. 

Mat 26:11  For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always. 

Mat 26:12  For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial. 

Mat 26:13  Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her. 

Mat 26:14  Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests, 

Mat 26:15  And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver. 

Mat 26:16  And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him. 

Mat 26:17  Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover? 

Mat 26:18  And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples. 

Mat 26:19  And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover. 

Mat 26:20  Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve. 

Mat 26:21  And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. 

Mat 26:22  And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I? 

Mat 26:23  And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me. 

Mat 26:24  The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born. 

Mat 26:25  Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said. 

Mat 26:26  And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. 

Mat 26:27  And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; 

Mat 26:28  For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. 

Mat 26:29  But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom. 

Mat 26:30  And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives. 

Mat 26:31  Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad. 

Mat 26:32  But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee. 

Mat 26:33  Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended. 

Mat 26:34  Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. 

Mat 26:35  Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples. 

Mat 26:36  Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. 

Mat 26:37  And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. 

Mat 26:38  Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. 

Mat 26:39  And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. 

Mat 26:40  And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? 

Mat 26:41  Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. 

Mat 26:42  He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. 

Mat 26:43  And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy. 

Mat 26:44  And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. 

Mat 26:45  Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 

Mat 26:46  Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me. 

Mat 26:47  And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people. 

Mat 26:48  Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast. 

Mat 26:49  And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him. 

Mat 26:50  And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him. 

Mat 26:51  And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear. 

Mat 26:52  Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. 

Mat 26:53  Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? 

Mat 26:54  But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be? 

Mat 26:55  In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me. 

Mat 26:56  But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.

Mar 14:1  After two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death. 

Mar 14:2  But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar of the people. 

Mar 14:3  And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head. 

Mar 14:4  And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made? 

Mar 14:5  For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her. 

Mar 14:6  And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me. 

Mar 14:7  For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always. 

Mar 14:8  She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying. 

Mar 14:9  Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her. 

Mar 14:10  And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went unto the chief priests, to betray him unto them. 

Mar 14:11  And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently betray him. 

Mar 14:12  And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, his disciples said unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the passover? 

Mar 14:13  And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him. 

Mar 14:14  And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the goodman of the house, The Master saith, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? 

Mar 14:15  And he will shew you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us. 

Mar 14:16  And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover. 

Mar 14:17  And in the evening he cometh with the twelve. 

Mar 14:18  And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me. 

Mar 14:19  And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I? 

Mar 14:20  And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish. 

Mar 14:21  The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born. 

Mar 14:22  And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body. 

Mar 14:23  And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it. 

Mar 14:24  And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many. 

Mar 14:25  Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God. 

Mar 14:26  And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.

Mar 14:33  And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy; 

Mar 14:34  And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch. 

Mar 14:35  And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 

Mar 14:36  And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt. 

Mar 14:37  And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour? 

Mar 14:38  Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak. 

Mar 14:39  And again he went away, and prayed, and spake the same words. 

Mar 14:40  And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither wist they what to answer him. 

Mar 14:41  And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 

Mar 14:42  Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand. 

Mar 14:43  And immediately, while he yet spake, cometh Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 

Mar 14:44  And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely. 

Mar 14:45  And as soon as he was come, he goeth straightway to him, and saith, Master, master; and kissed him. 

Mar 14:46  And they laid their hands on him, and took him. 

Mar 14:47  And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. 

Mar 14:48  And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and with staves to take me? 

Mar 14:49  I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled. 

Mar 14:50  And they all forsook him, and fled.

Luk 22:1  Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover. 

Luk 22:2  And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people. 

Luk 22:3  Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. 

Luk 22:4  And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them. 

Luk 22:5  And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money. 

Luk 22:6  And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude. 

Luk 22:7  Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed. 

Luk 22:8  And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat. 

Luk 22:9  And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare? 

Luk 22:10  And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in. 

Luk 22:11  And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? 

Luk 22:12  And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready. 

Luk 22:13  And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover. 

Luk 22:14  And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. 

Luk 22:15  And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: 

Luk 22:16  For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. 

Luk 22:17  And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: 

Luk 22:18  For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. 

Luk 22:19  And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. 

Luk 22:20  Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you. 

Luk 22:21  But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table. 

Luk 22:22  And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed! 

Luk 22:23  And they began to enquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing. 

Luk 22:24  And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. 

Luk 22:25  And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. 

Luk 22:26  But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. 

Luk 22:27  For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth. 

Luk 22:28  Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations. 

Luk 22:29  And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me; 

Luk 22:30  That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 

Luk 22:31  And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: 

Luk 22:32  But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. 

Luk 22:33  And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death. 

Luk 22:34  And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me. 

Luk 22:35  And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing. 

Luk 22:36  Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. 

Luk 22:37  For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end. 

Luk 22:38  And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough. 

Luk 22:39  And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him. 

Luk 22:40  And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation. 

Luk 22:41  And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, 

Luk 22:42  Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. 

Luk 22:43  And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. 

Luk 22:44  And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 

Luk 22:45  And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow, 

Luk 22:46  And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. 

Joh 11:1  Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. 

Joh 11:2  (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) 

Joh 11:3  Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. 

Joh 11:4  When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. 

Joh 11:5  Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. 

Joh 11:6  When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was. 

Joh 11:7  Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. 

Joh 11:8  His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again? 

Joh 11:9  Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. 

Joh 11:10  But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him. 

Joh 11:11  These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. 

Joh 11:12  Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. 

Joh 11:13  Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. 

Joh 11:14  Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. 

Joh 11:15  And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him. 

Joh 11:16  Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellow disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him. 

Joh 11:17  Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already. 

Joh 11:18  Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off: 

Joh 11:19  And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. 

Joh 11:20  Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house. 

Joh 11:21  Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. 

Joh 11:22  But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. 

Joh 11:23  Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. 

Joh 11:24  Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. 

Joh 11:25  Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: 

Joh 11:26  And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? 

Joh 11:27  She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. 

Joh 11:28  And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee. 

Joh 11:29  As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him. 

Joh 11:30  Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him. 

Joh 11:31  The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there. 

Joh 11:32  Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. 

Joh 11:33  When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, 

Joh 11:34  And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see. 

Joh 11:35  Jesus wept. 

Joh 11:36  Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! 

Joh 11:37  And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died? 

Joh 11:38  Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. 

Joh 11:39  Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days. 

Joh 11:40  Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? 

Joh 11:41  Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. 

Joh 11:42  And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. 

Joh 11:43  And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. 

Joh 11:44  And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. 

Joh 11:45  Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. 

Joh 11:46  But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done. 

Joh 11:47  Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. 

Joh 11:48  If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation. 

Joh 11:49  And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, 

Joh 11:50  Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. 

Joh 11:51  And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; 

Joh 11:52  And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad. 

Joh 11:53  Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death. 

Joh 11:54  Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples. 

Joh 11:55  And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves. 

Joh 11:56  Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast? 

Joh 11:57  Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him. 

Joh 12:1  Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead. 

Joh 12:2  There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him. 

Joh 12:3  Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. 

Joh 12:4  Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him, 

Joh 12:5  Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? 

Joh 12:6  This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. 

Joh 12:7  Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this. 

Joh 12:8  For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always. 

The Plot to Kill Lazarus

Joh 12:9  Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead. 

Joh 12:10  But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death; 

Joh 12:11  Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus. 

Joh 18:1  When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples. 

Joh 18:2  And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples. 

Joh 18:3  Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. 

Joh 18:4  Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? 

Joh 18:5  They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. 

Joh 18:6  As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. 

Joh 18:7  Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. 

Joh 18:8  Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way: 

Joh 18:9  That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none. 

Joh 18:10  Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. 

Joh 18:11  Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it? 

Joh 18:12  Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him
