Ro. {4:16} Therefore [it is] of faith, that [it might be] by grace; to the end the promise might besure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, butto that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is thefather of us all
**Sin existed for humans the moment Eve disobeyed God.
Therefore it's correct to say that sin is disobeying God.
Gen. '...Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?'
Command given.
Command disobeyed.
Sin.
Was the command therefore the law? It was not called the law at that time, no. It's God talking, God telling, and God expecting obedience. God out of love guiding His creation in His way.
Abraham didn't have a *set law* to follow either. God didn't have a *people* as a group that He called His for a long time either. In fact He destroyed all but 8 people once and let those 8 people multiply and eventually Abraham walked by faith with God and became the father of God's chosen people. Still God did not give people a *set* law. There was a law they knew, a moral law that they knew from the beginning. Murder was NEVER okay, even before the written law. Lying was never okay, coveting was never okay, breaking the Sabbath was never okay, adultery was never okay, dishonoring your parents never okay, etc. These things, these 'moral' laws were from the beginning. Sin entered and man began to break these moral laws, Cain killed Abel- it was sin. People setting up idols and worshipping other gods- sin. Before the moral law was written down as the ten commandments, it still existed. Abraham followed this moral law and had only one God, he worshipped God, he honored God, he didn't take God's name in vain, he kept the Sabbath rest instituted at Eden, he didn't disobey his parents, he didn't commit adultery or lie, cheat, steal, covet. Abraham found grace in the eyes of the Lord through faith. The moral law was upheld by Abraham before it was ever written down.
If those weren't moral laws, there would have been no sinning, right? Sin is the transgression of the law.
1 John {3:4} 'Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.'
There has to be a law for there to be the breaking of the law.
God's command is law.
Adam and Eve disobeyed the command given them by God.
The result...sin.
Where there is sin, there is a law being broken.
In our worldly society with it's worldly laws, when a person breaks the law they are in trouble (if caught). The moral law is God's law and when it's broken we are in trouble and we're always caught we can't hide anything from God. The penalty for sinning, for breaking God's law is death.
Romans {6:23} 'For the wages of sin is death...'
No. It's not instantaneous death, just like it wasn't instantaneous death for Adam and Eve. Just because the punishment isn't always instantaneous doesn't mean it's not coming.
We all deserve to die.
**What's this mean...
Ro. {4:16} Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might besure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, butto that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is thefather of us all
**After Moses had freed God's chosen people from Egypt a written law was given to them, not just the moral law, but all sorts of laws to govern their entire way of life. This too was given to them out of love to try and mold and make them into a people who would come to love and know God. The seed which is of the law- are known to be those after Moses, those known as the Children of Israel. Grace and God's promise was not just for those known then as the Children of Israel and today know as the Jewish people. Grace is offered to all, even those who aren't direct descendents of the Children of God- Israel. Abraham had a faith before there was a people of God. Abraham's faith made him worthy to be the *father* of that nation. That same faith is available to all those who aren't in that nation.
People who say the law was done away with have to realize that the moral law was from the beginning. That sin before the written law was still sin.
Putting God second, putting mankind second, will forever and has always been a transgression of a moral law, the law we know and realize without the written law. The law that is natural. The law that instinctively tells us right from wrong. The law that is written in our hearts.
Grace through Jesus Christ and His sacrifice is offered to all of us. We can't be saved from the punishment of death without grace, without Jesus.
Ro. {6:23} 'For the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of God [is] eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.'
We are given the gift of life through Jesus.
Ro. {8:3} 'For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: {8:4} That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. {8:5} For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. {8:6} For to be carnally minded [is] death; but to be spiritually minded [is] life and peace. {8:7} Because the carnal mind [is] enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. {8:8} So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. {8:9} But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. {8:10} And if Christ [be] in you, the body [is] dead because of sin; but the Spirit [is] life because of righteousness. {8:11} But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he thatraised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.'
The righteousness of the law - the righteousness of the law it was this righteousness that Abraham had through faith. This righteousness isn't something we can ever have by merely following the law and having a formality of them, the pharisees had that. The Spirit is what allows us to have the righteousness that comes by faith in Jesus Christ, the righteousness that Abraham had through faith. The Spirit of Christ needs to be in us for that is life. Our carnal lives mean nothing compared to the spiritual life we can possess through faith in Jesus, through His grace and mercy. You can be good all you like and follow the laws of man and God to the last little dotted 'i', and it means nothing if it's all carnal, if it's done without the Spirit of God dwelling in You.
People need to realize that while keeping the law will never save you, that keeping God's law becomes natural to those who are saved and have God's Spirit within them. Love God and Love your neighbor, the law, God's law.
Amen.
